Marianne Alderman
I have been intrigued with art for
a long time but it wasn't until
retirement that I did anything
about it. I enrolled in classes at
the Renaissance Center in
Kingsport, studing under Russell
Blankenship. He was very
encouraging, always commenting
on my natural ability to draw.
Then I studied under John Proffit
from the Kingsport Art Guild for
two years. He encouraged me to
enter one of my paintings in the
Appalachian Art Show. I was not
awarded any prizes, but was
elated to be in the show. After a
move to Jonesborough I studied
under Urban Bird and continue to
do so. About the same time I
joined the Watauga Valley Art
League. This has been a great
learning experience, and is
something I have put my heart
and sole into. My association with
this league and its members has
been the highlight of my
retirement years.
