ARTIST STATEMENT

What inspires me? Light and
shadow dancing in the natural
world; lonely old abandoned
buildings in a field; flowers stirring
in the wind; wild and domestic
animals; the dominating
undulations of the mountains of
East Tennessee.

I use symbols from ancient
civilizations and cultures to try to
communicate my understanding of
the relationship between form and
the undifferentiated nothingness
before the form; the relationship
between matter and energy;
between consciousness and
instinct.

I see archetypes everywhere. I gasp
at the awesomeness of Nature. My
attention is hypnotized. The events
I experience are, poignant,
energetic, ecstatic, and unique. I
want to record it in order to play it
back, to re-experience it over and
over and over. Words will not
suffice, so I use watercolors, or
water-soluble oils to try to capture
the feelings - the energy - the
ecstasy. But sometimes only plaster
or clay can transmit the ambiance
and aura.
