LaDonna M West

LaDonna grew up in the rural heartland of
America and became fond of the rustic and
simplistic beauty of the vast countryside,
taking particular interest in its intricate
patterns and brilliant colors. She began
merging the aspects of contemporary
design with traditional landscape painting,
eventually developing a technique which
became the eminent feature of her work.
The panel on which she begins is sculpted
with a variety of paper that she has
collected and torn into various shapes and
sizes. Each piece is individually and
strategically mounted on the board helping
to form its textural surface. It is her most
favorite process because it is where the
image comes to life providing her the
opportunity to work bare-handed. The
flexibility of acrylic medium allows her the
freedom to sculpt, adhere, and create an
array of visual effects which are an integral
part of each piece. She chooses subject
matter that inspires the spirit and stirs the
soul.

Currently residing in Piney Flats,
Tennessee, LaDonna is married and mother
of two boys. In 1989 she obtained a
bachelor's of Fine Arts in Graphic Design
from Howard University where she studied
under groups of both instructional and
professional artists. She also took graduate
courses in Experimental Studio at Western
Carolina University, has taught art to
students of all ages, and has been a
practicing artist for nearly twenty years.
